My "Very Short" Story
This is the page I set aside to tell you a bit about myself. That’s hard to do without making it sound like a resume or a “look at me” page, but I did the best I could. I’ve focused mainly on writing accomplishments because this is, after all, a blog about words and writing. From writing poems in class when my assignments were finished to reading novels from the time I was in elementary school, to writing stories and songs that no one ever saw, I’ve always been fascinated by words. There’s a whole lot more that has happened in the years from childhood to where I am now, but this might already be more than you want to know, so I’ll make it as short as possible.
I'm a freelance writer with a special heart for writing from a Christian worldview. Born in a small town in eastern Colorado, I spent most of my elementary school years in Redondo Beach, California. I loved the ocean and living near so many extended family members on my mother’s side. My sisters and I enjoyed cousins and family get-togethers and authentic Italian food along with building sandcastles at the seashore. Our family then moved to a farm in western Kansas where we rode horses, went on hayrides, and brought the milk cow in from the pasture.
I graduated from a small-town high school where everybody knew everybody--most since childhood. While life in Kansas was very different from Southern California, Kansas was a great place to live, too, and helped to give me an understanding of two very diverse ways of life. I went on to attend Fort Hays State University and Emporia State University in Kansas.
My husband, Harold, and I raised our son and daughter in Kansas. Then in 1987 the Lord led us to the Phoenix metro area of Arizona. We were now “empty nesters” and I had more time to explore my creative desires. I worked in the Sears advertising department and later in the ad design office of a local newspaper. I also completed the Trompe L’oeil course at the American Academy of Decorative Arts in Scottsdale, AZ and faux painting training at The Faux Finish School in Louisville, KY. In addition to doing freelance advertising and graphic design work, I painted murals and spent many years teaching art to children. I also completed the Magazine Article and Novel Writing courses through the Institute for Writers. Whether through the arts or through writing, I have always been drawn to the creative side of life.
I love biographical stories, especially when they share the message of the Lord Jesus Christ. I was blessed to write two inspirational biographies, The Prayer That Makes a Difference and This Side of Heaven, both published through Sable Creek Press, a publishing company I started in 2002. I also enjoy writing children’s stories including the audio book, Plop! Goes the Blue Swirl Ice Cream, and my short stories have been published in national magazines. I’ve had fun writing humorous programs and skits and especially enjoyed writing a full-length musical/drama with a gospel message.
I've been privileged to work with beginning authors and publish their books through my indie publishing company where we focused primarily on mid-grade novels for children. In 2019 I turned my attention fully to writing, including offering ghost writing services for those who have a story to tell but don’t necessarily have an interest in writing it themselves.
We currently live in Glendale, AZ. We are blessed with two children and eleven grandchildren.
